4B- The Caledonian Ark

The Caledonian Ark

On Friday 28 November Primary 4B were very lucky enough to be invited to take part in a workshop at the Edinburgh College of Art on Lauriston Place. During the workshop the children were given the opportunity to investigate and draw a range of endangered Scottish animals, birds and insects.

The first thing that the children were asked to do was to choose one of the animals, insects or birds in front of them and to draw/ paint it using any of the materials in front of them, anything except a pencil!
This was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to get creative.

After rotating around to a different table, the children had to choose an animal, insect or bird and select one of the features to exaggerate.

Finally, the children were asked to select one of the animals, birds or insects which they had seen during the day and create a mini picture of their choice for a time capsule. The children's capsules were then used to create a wall display in the college.

What a fantastic day

4B- Advertisers in the making

4B have been working really hard over the past couple of weeks to create and produce an advert for a healthy lentil soup.
To begin with each group came up with a brand name, a name for their lentil soup and a slogan. These are as follows:

Super Duper Soups' Mental Lentil soup
'Eat, Slurp, Enjoy'
by Melissa Mc, Giorgia, Ella, Kirsten & Camille

Soup-a-man's Lazy Lentil soup
'Soup that makes you fly away'
by Caspar, Jay & Roscoe

Super Sippers' Lucky Lentil soup
'Sip, Slurp, Happy'
by Iseabhail, Faye, Paloma & Zara

Singing Soups' Mental Lentil soup
'Sing with soup'
by Fraser, Joseph, Louis & Sam

MASSE's Lovely Lentil soup
'Eat, Drink, Chew'
by Stella, Margret, Emma Mc, Emma M & Alice

Snappa Soups' Lucky Lentil soup
'It's happy, it's snappy, it's snappa soup'
by Max, Morar, Bogdan & Melissa M

Super Spoons' Lovely Lentil soup
'Spoons Up'
by Henry, Tom, Luca, Finlay & Jackson

The groups then collaborated to come up with a design for their packaging (pictures to follow), then brainstormed and prepared a script for their ad.

Click on the link below for access to the finished products. I think you'll agree that we have budding actors and actresses in the making!!

Miss McGrouther

Tuesday is 'Brain Day'

Over the past couple of weeks Tuesday has been 'Brain Day' in 4B.

Mrs Anstruther has been helping us to learn all about the brain, its functions and how that affects our learning.

She has taught us about neurons and the pathways that are formed to help us retain information and begin to do things automatically.

We know that a healthy brain requires: food, water, exercise and lots of sleep.
This is a picture of a pig's brain which we got to touch. Did you know that it is very fatty?

This is us trying to work on our memory. We had to listen to a list of items and try to remember them. Mrs Anstruther has been teaching us some methods to help us remember things better.
We've also been practising memorising the items in the box. Try it at home. How many can you remember?

At the end of every session we have been doing a little bit of Mindfulness to help us relax and to be aware of what is happening around us.

* * *

On the 23 November we were very luck to have a special visitor. Max's mum, Dr Tara Spires-Jones, who knows all there is to know about brains came to speak to us.

She taught us about all of the different parts of the brain and told us what it was like to be a scientist for a living (this is now what we all want to do). We learned so many fascinating facts about the brain and were about to ask lots of questions. Soon we'll be experts too!

Most importantly of all we know that we are capable of learning anything. If things are tricky we know just to relax, have a go and give it our best shot. After all, we learn from failing and it's okay to do so. If something is difficult we are learning to say to ourselves: it's okay, I just can't do this YET.

P4C visit from Archaeology Students

P4C were treated to a visit from some Archaeology Students this week to complete our ongoing Egyptian topic work.

The activities included looking at the tools archaeologists use on digs, looking at and handling animal bones and then “mummifying” oranges.
